In most debates, I sit-pretty on the fence. I’m the kind of person that sees just as much logic on both sides of the issue, and - as such - I tend to remain neutral (because if I throw my chips into someone else’s pool, I automatically "adopt" all of his views and get branded).

While this remains true here, I’m pretty-much agreeing with lemon.

As my first response, let me say that cussing is *not* a reflection of an uneducated mind. I know full-well that lemon is a very smart person - he wouldn’t be here if he wasn’t. Wink

Cursing, at its core, is essential to language. In fact, cursing *is* language. Language is nothing more than the expression of thoughts, feelings, and situations through vocal vibrations. It’s how we put the world into human perspective.

The A-word, the F-word, the many B-words, and the slue of S-words each has its unique place that cannot be replicated by more PC words. At times, the only way someone can describe their emotions is through a curse-word. I understand that completely, and as such I use swears if and when I feel the justification for it. That is the case for *every* word I use. I waste neither air nor characters.

And I think lemon’s point that children hear worse "on the playground" is extremely valid, if not underspoken. Western culture has regularized every word with the exception of three (PM me if you want to know the three), and every child has heard the entire litany of swears by the age of seven, even if he isn’t aware of it yet. Using the word ass in a passing response to a LotR TCG thread on CobraCards.com - just about the most-isolated nook on the Internet - will not traumatize or even phase a child. They might giggle at the sight, but their lives are not ruined or affected (unless, of course, they have been detrimentally isolated from the world).

My belief is that the idea of a ’swear word’ is ridiculous. What happened to "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me?" We’re taught that before we even know *how* to insult, yet we take great offense to being called names or being ’cursed’ at. That’s such a silly double-standard that it makes me laugh at times.

Words are words. They are all equal, they are equally useful and useless. We pick our words to help describe the chemical impulses in our brains. There should be no reputation or opinion attached to any of them. To do so gives power to the word, which - when you look at it like that - seems, well... stupid.

When I came to Abraham I let him live just a moment longer. When I came to Moses I saved his life more than once. But the salmon... I regret to say I had a hand in its death.

Who am I?

The fact is, you guys are getting worked up at the most trivial of things. No one on this site actually does real "quality" cursing (just a word here and there). When you youngins grow up, you’ll understand.

Without respite my blood will flow
O’er your eyes ‘til they cannot see
The impossibility of victory.'

You sir just lost $10. I regret to inform you that I am, in fact, not closely related to NB. I know it’s shocking, but we can all get over it eventually. Question

Some of you say, “We can do whatever we want to!” But I tell you that not everything may be good or helpful. 24 We should think about others and not about ourselves. 25 However, when you buy meat in the market, go ahead and eat it. Keep your conscience clear by not asking where the meat came from.

I think that sums it all up. Wise words for christians and non-christians as well. I think that words are indeed just words. I think we should be reluctant to offend people, but I also think we should not be easily offended. If you’re offended by someones language, the best thing is to PM him and explain him/her (for all the ladies in the house Wink) why you are offended. I think the main reaction will be: oh, ok, I’ll take notice of it. Going out in public, others will interfere, contributing nothing to the discussion, and just say certain things are fun Rolling Eyes Twisted Evil ...well, keep things nice and friendly, and as we say in Holland, don’t make an eliphant out of a fly guys!

Woot i have support! Yay. And theres me starting to think that if i went to the USA and said ass id be arrested. Glad you gave your time up to give such an admiral explanation of my defence menace and Ge as well. I guess NB and AP aren’t representative of America. So i reckon you can’t dictate how it affects Americans as its just you and your opinions.

So quit whining at me!

@LeoKula: Okay. Well, its fun for me to do a lot of stuff that offends people. Matter of fact, I love burning Brazillian flags. And if you don’t want me to do it, tough. Its fun.

I’m an American, and swearing has never bothered me, as long as it isn’t used constantly. Then it gets annoying. When used once in a while, as emphasis, however, it’s quite effective. I agree with m64 and ge completely, well said guys! Applause

I find it a bit disturbing that Lem0n is constantly called out about saying the A word, but MR. Lurtzy (nothing against him, just an observation) has used the F word twice on these forums, and no one has said a thing about it. It seems a bit odd to me. Eh?

yes it does, doesn’t it Laughing

personally, I don’t like swearing, all too often I see people throw around curse words with no regard for anything. Now I agree that in some situations it is...called for...but just tossing them around frequently makes little sense and I would agree is a sign of ...stupidity. However I think that is not the case with lem0n though I can’t say the same in Mr. lurtzy’s case Wink Laughing

there are times when swearing has purpose, but just throwing them around for now reason is a waste so to speak.

Okay, I don’t exactly approve of Lem0n using the word, given the composition of parts of the forum population. BUT. Language is not immutable. That particular word is very rapidly losing it’s "bad word"-ness in American English, and lost it long ago in English English (if it ever had it).

Like I said, I figure Lem0n could be a little more tactful, but on the other hand, I also think NB’s overreacting a little. I understand why he’s reacting to it, but....

ge: agree with you.

menace: sorry, gotta disagree to a limited degree. Words are visual/auditory symbols of concepts/ideas, etc. Regardless of whether or not the particular image (aka strings of letters) r sound is "bad", it represents a particular approach, connotation, denotation, etc of a concept, object, idea, etc, which does inherently have "power"... as a representation of... blah blah blah. Point being, even if the "word" itself isn’t inherently bad, it can pick up such by being the expression of a "bad connotation" etc.

...Alright, that’s my random rambling thoughts for the day. I go to eat chocolate now.
Never kid about politicians. The more bizarre the joke, the more likely it is to come true.
