After a bit of thought, I’d like to leave users with the possibility of change their name, as long as they really mean it and aren’t just playing a prank, switching back and forth, or something like that. So, that option has been left in place, but is now very expensive (500 GP).

The pickpocketing idea could potentially be really fun; it’s sort of an "investment" like Felipe was suggesting, but with a sense of role-play to it. And the idea of snatching 1 GP from someone who annoys you without them knowing just seems fun... Laughing The trick is to set it up so that it doesn’t creature a negative experience for the folks on the other end. It would either be set up so you couldn’t harrass one person (e.g., steal 1 GP a day, but target the same person only once a week), and/or there would be a cheap countermeasure, an item you could buy that would prevent people from picking your virtual pocket.

I don’t like the other "investment" ideas very much; IMO they don’t seem fun at all, they’re just a way of manipulating the numbers.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions, keep ’em coming!

Hmm...it would be interesting if there was a CC-exclusive item, that you could buy with GP. For example: wallpaper, a screensaver, or a Windows Media Player skin.

And then a CC "slot machine" would be interesting...is that legal? Wink But basically the same as a regular slot machine, offering the chance to make GP when you put in GP.

Definitely, some sort of profile enhancement would be cool. For example...being able to add a wallpaper to your profile or something. Or having a border around your avatar. Or getting medals you can put in your siggy. You could offer medals for purchase to people who’ve completed things: for example, if you win the Strategy Article contest, you can buy a medal for that.

Hm, here’s a (somewhat off-topic) thought...

What would you guys think about a system that does NOT automatically award GP when you post, but instead allows actual users to award GP when they think a post is useful?

For example, imagine a little "Thumbs Up" icon at the bottom of each post; by clicking it (only once per post) you would award the author 1 GP.

I’m actually starting to lean toward this, because no matter how carefully coded, computers are simply not good at determining the quality of a post. Counting characters is better than nothing, but still seems inadequate. Under this new system, the value of a post is decided by human beings, and you’ll get GP not for typing a lot, but for typing stuff that’s actually good. (Whatever that means to people.)

Thoughts?

you would have to make sure people didn’t do this on their own posts. and if someone wanted to they could seriously abuse the system like "hey i’ll give you 1000 gp if you donate 500 of it to me" kind of thing.

That is the system that I was originally thinking of. I have been on forums that use that system and it works great. It really reflects more truly how much of an influence a certain user has on the community. I’d go with it.

I’ve seen "karma" systems that work similarily, but the thing is people who aren’t as known won’t get any gold for excellent posts, where active, favorite members will get heaps of thumbs up for mediocre/poor ones.

Not the case in the forums that I’ve been a part of. I think people can recognize a valuable post when they see one. Check out www.fxhome.com/forums and you’ll see what I mean.

Yeah, obviously people wouldn’t be able to do this to their own posts.

Hm, you’re right that this could create a problem in combination with the donation system. Sad

Given the choice between GP awarded by computer that can be transferred between users, and GP awarded by users that CANNOT be transferred, which seems better?

i think that players should award GP without being able to donate. i really don’t see the point in donations, anyway. i worked hard for this gp, i’m gonna keep it. However, people could still say "i’ll give you 500 if you give me 500". it is funny how i can think of all of this... Twisted Evil
