This discussion moved here, to help try to fix the "de-railing" of the "Pics" thread.

I just visited the Imageshack link...and it said "Welcome, cobracards.com visitor"! How did it know??
I’ll stick with Photobucket for now...

Guitarrem, it has to do with whether or not you have cookies enabled. If you have cookies enabled, then every website you go to recieves the following information:
1. Your IP address
2. The referral website (the one you just came from, in this case Cobra)
3. Your operating system
4. Your browsing program
The first is useful as it is an efficient way to track who comes and who goes (so it can recognize you and automatically sign you in, for instance).
The second is useful for payment reasons, as sometimes referring websites get payment whenever someone visits the destination site.
The last two are sent to and from so that the website you are visiting can automatically adjust settings so that it will work better on your browser/OS.

If it kind of creeps you out to know people can know this about you, you can disable cookies in your browser’s security section, but this means that some websites won’t work as well, and websites can’t "remember" who you are.

Yeah, that’s kind of the trade-off you get with the internet. You are pretty much forced to give this information, because if you don’t, some of your favorite sites won’t let you in. It’s kind of sad, but we all have to deal with it Rolling Eyes
There ARE ways to enable cookies for certain sites, but this is more advanced and most people don’t have the understanding to do it. I haven’t looked into it, since I don’t really mind all that much.

Cookies are a way for sites to store little bits of data on your computer. That may sound malicious, but it’s really not; cookies are necessary for the operating of a lot of complex websites.

For example, these forums create a small cookie that contains your login information. Without it, the site can’t verify who you are, and keeps asking you to log in again.

Similarly, the card shop keeps your shopping cart information in a cookie. Without it, your cart would have a tendency to randomly empty itself.

I don’t think cookies have anything to do with the information that BrianBoitano listed, though. You can disable cookies in your browser and delete all existing cookies -- but nevertheless sites will receive information that they have a visitor with IP address X, using browser Y, who clicked there from site Z.

Cobra- thanks for setting me straight. To tell ya the truth, I wasn’t entirely sure that what I said up there was true d'oh!
I just knew that cookies stored information, and that sites had access to this other information, so cookies were involved with this information Wink
So yeah, you guys can stop listening to me now (d’oh!)
