It could be a small carnivorous animal trapped inside the computer.

Could be that one of your system fans is going. If it quits when you shut down all the programs that are running that indicates that there is less of a load on the system and that the components that have fans on them (typically CPU, Video card and often your chipset on the motherboard) are using less energy and thus need less cooling.

What are your hardware specs if you don’t mind my asking?

1.9 ghz processor, 1 gig ram, 256 radeon vid card, theres like 4 fans in there. I do have two rather large harddrives (one 160, and a 300). thats merrick, I’ll take a look at my fans.

I’m likin’ your specs. What kind of CPU; AMD or Intel? And what model?

i’m not sure what my processor is honestly. my mom killed the old mother board last year, so we had it all re done, and I never caught the brand.

Woah, wait a minute.
2GHz Core Duo + 2gigs of RAM + 460GB HD + 20" Display + X1600 Radeon GPU = Amazing.

But Amazing + Mac OSX = Failure.
Waste of a good system...

You dont have a price sheet or anything? And I did the same thing to my PC. In the process of re-buildin’ it.
