The U.S. House Energy & Commerce Committee is currently considering a bill that would gut Internet Neutrality, a basic set of rules that preserve free speech on, and equal access to, the internet.

If this bill becomes law, internet service providers would be able to legally restrict access to certain websites. One likely consequence is that ISPs would begin collecting money from website owners for favorable treatment. Those who don’t pay up would risk having ISPs restrict access to their sites -- for example, by forcing the site to load more slowly.

Simply put, communications companies stand to rake in tons of cash at the expense of everyone else -- businesses, consumers, and of course, anyone interested in free speech and equal access to the internet. That’s why they’re spending millions of dollars to push this legislation.

Now, I don’t normally post political stuff here, but I’m making an exception in this case for two reasons:

1) Opposition to this bill is wide-reaching and truly non-partisan. The bill threatens both free speech, and the free market. The "Save the Internet" coalition includes groups from the left (MoveOn) and the right (Gun Owners of America); consumer advocacy groups (Consumer Action) and big business (Google); and from a huge variety of other organizations as well.

2) Most of you reading this have a personal interest in preserving Internet Neutrality! Online shoppers would be particular hard hit, as "protection money" paid to ISPs would force prices up, and fair comparison shopping would go out the window.

Will never happen... or at least that’s what I’d say if politicians had any form of intelligence at all. After Bush though... I fear anything is possible.

Stuff like this does happen, under any president. Wink

I certainly hope this bill dies a horrible horrible death as soon as possible, but there’s too much money flowing and not enough public attention... definitely a bad combination if history is any guide. Think

How serious of a threat is this, and how would this in any way affect me?
I don't have an avatar, I don't have a sig, my posts speak for themselves.

That’s still up for debate I think, but the Committee and the comm. companies are certainly taking it seriously! See also:

I mentioned one way it could affect the Cobra Cards crowd (particularly the online shoppers) above. For more long-term effects:

If you live in America: A great deal. If not, a lot of the US driven sites would probably shut down.

It’s something like 22 for keeping neutrality (this is good), 34 against (bad) and 1 undecided. It’d still have to go through congress, where I’m hoping it won’t be given the time of day.

That is dumb,
I hope that our overpaid congress men will do something important like pass some new immagration laws instead of waisting time on this.
Also they should work out some way to relieve fuel prices.
Like drilling in the ANWR or useing ethanol.
Here in Iowa ethanol is great! Dancing

Spammers really are amazing creatures. You can learn all there is to know about their ways in a month. And yet, after a hundred years, they can still surprise you. Razz
