Bored, so I went through all off the 0-post members and, while most of them are probably bots, picked out the ones that should probably be killed now.

rulacrusbal - Inappropriate language in signature (and link to a fishy site). This bot actually has two accounts, both under the same name.
sbdxjh - Lots of suspicious links in signature
Alatkoma - Suspicious link in signature
anypetaipse - Inappropriate language in signature (and link to a fishy site)

Take 'em out, Rogue Leader!

Deleted all except for sbdxjh. They make it easy -- both website and ICQ in contact details, as well as last being active the day they were created. As for sbdxjh... some sort of obsession with ringworm? But otherwise the user has been active recently so I'll let it stand for now.

I think I may install an auto-pruning feature... say if an account is over three months old and has less than 10 posts, it goes. What do y'all think?

Nah, I don't think so. Maybe if its over three months old and has 0 or 1 post. But not 10. Usually, if its bad, we'd notice 10 posts and delete it manually.

Specially since there IS the possibility of a Member's Lounge only member, at least for a while, and posts there do not count toward post-count totals. Or the system would be able to detect these as well?

Same thing happened to the short-lived LOTR TCG PC forums.

Have you tried contacting Conor for ideas, Kralik? He seemed to keep CC remarkably bot-free, and I'd love to know how.

Well, I upped the captcha different and it seems to have stopped the influx. I have a few ideas for anti-bot measures, such as the funny but efficient "Kitten Captcha" :P In the meantime, I have been looking over the members list sorted by most recently registered and cleaning up the likely bots. I don't want to delete a real user by accident, though, so I'm being somewhat conservative.

For now, I would strongly recommend switching on Member Activation:

"When this option is enabled any members registering to the forum will have a activation link emailed to them which they must click before they can become full members."

Right now, we have checked Immediate Registration, which says "new members can login and post immediately after registering on your forum."

That alone will hopefully at least stem the tide.
