He will only try to break into an account if he's banned. He's a bigger threat if you ban him than if yoiu don't.

Also, I highly contest banning him in the first place. why? think about it, at CC there were flame wars all the time, occasionally a mod would step in, but NO ONE I repeat no one got banned. While, tOO got whacked with the sword and his account deleted but that was for cheating on the GP system.

Well, I think the decision should be up to all of us (admins and mods together). I know nothing about USF and his past history. In any case, Dain and I just tried a ban experiment. A Full Ban, which USF is on for the next few days, completely prevents all forum access. IIRC, from reading the SMF source code, one of the very first things it checks for before doing anything is whether an IP is banned. Doubtful that someone under such a ban could do any hacking.

Anyway, I'd still rather the ban last the promised amount of time. He can wait a few more days. Hopefully he'll keep that in mind if he contemplates flaming again.

Flame wars are one thing. Some of them can actually be constructive as long as people don't go overboard. But what USF was doing was just going to every thread he felt like and insulting people. That ain't constructive at all, and you can tell him (and I will remind him soon) that it will NOT be tolerated here. I've seen too many good communities run into the ground because of breakdowns in civility, and it almost always starts with just one troublemaker.

I trust you, SoP, and it's mostly because of you that I'm willing to ease up a bit after the ban ends. But I will make it clear to you, and to USF, that if he tries that crap again, he's gone. Period. Hacking is NOT going to be happening here. It pits one or two guys against the rest of the forumers, and I'm going to take the rest of the forumers any day.

Flaming and attacking is one thing. Hacking is entirely another. In my book, he'll have one more chance to prove he "won't try that anymore", and one chance only.

I highly doubt there will be any more hacking problems. Since you instituted the ban, you can't now back down, let it expire on its own, but don't be too trigger happy. IMO banning him (despite my joking comments on the thread) wasn't necessary. However, make him feel that he's on a very tight leash, maybe drop a pm hinting at such, make him feel there's an imminent threat.

If in the very improbable circumstance that he is hacking, ban is only then an option.

Agreed, except for the part about letting the ban expire constituting as backing down. I told him it would be one week, so letting the ban expire after one week (five more days, I believe) would simply be doing as I promised.

I will be PMing and e-mailing him before then and explaining very clearly what will and will not stand after that. I'll also be making some very simple guidelines in a Golden Hall announcement so that he (nor anyone else that comes along and wants to make trouble) can't just say "this isn't fair...you never told me!" or something like that.

I'll also make it very clear what the consequences are. Hacking will certainly be one of the easier ways to get tossed for good.

And finish the sentence. If he's a harmless pain, then show him the rod, and let him go.
If he causes problems, have SoP and BtO beat the snot out of him, then ban as necessary.

HOWEVER. Hacking, to me, seems like it should be near the top of the banning list, regardless how "harmless" the hacker is. Especially since it's so soon after the demise of CC... due to hacker(S).

LOL too true...he was bored so he decided to look up stuff about various people and figure things out about them.

are we sure it was due to hackers? and he never actually hacked...he just hit the send new password button on random peoples accounts and took over mine to see the mod forum... and if anyone new me my account question and password would be really easy to get...which is why I changed them

Ok stopped reading near top of this page as got bored. The way i see it; Hes a frickin tool. Why do we need jerks flaming, mouthin off and then hacking? Why should we put up with it? Screw him. Where the #$&*@! are you guys coming from with all the leniancy? CC was soft compared to most forums, dont make this as soft. Any normal run forum would have this guy "x listed" instantly.
