Stickying
« on: May 31, 2008, 11:11:25 pm »
Well...unfortunately, it seems that with us new mods coming in, there isn't really a set structure for moderating, we're kinda told, "keep things in line, have fun."

And, unfortunately, this has resulted in a bit of complications with the excercise of mod duties.

I suggest that perhaps in the way of stickies, this might be a problem. I've been part of boards where mods sticky every other thread because they think its cool. Now I'm not saying this is a problem, but I do think that there should be some sort of guideline for stickying threads. Especially since I've seen a couple threads pop up already that were unjustifiedly stickied.

I would say a thread should only be stickied if it is an aid to any person browsing the forums. This would include indexes, guidelines, guides (like suggestions on how to build a deck, make a DC, trade cards, etc) and such. Threads that are simply another thread typical of the forum, IMO, should not be stickied, and yes, I am particularly referring to this one. Now don't get me wrong, I think the DC contest is excellent, but is it worth a sticky? Since it is simply another DC contest, I don't believe it should be stickied.

I am free for discussion on the subject, and believe that it would be helpful to compile some sort of mod guideline for issues like this.

Thanks!

~NB

Obviously, stickying every thread is the answer.

And then unsticky the important ones to create a reverse situation in which the important stuff is at the END of the forum! Of course. What was I thinking.

/sarcasm.

No, seriously, any opinions? Comments? Objections (please direct to auto_delete@nbarden.com)?

2-3 of stickies per forum should be the max... I would agree with the DC contest not needing to be stickied. Since it is active, it will return to the top of the forum often anyway. A better idea would be to put a "current DC contests" thread at the top, with a table of contents linking to other threads. However, TLHH is small enough that it's probably not needed.

I'm of two minds on this. On one hand, I agree with NB and Kralik that only a couple very pertinent threads should be stickied in a forum. However, I don't particularly have a problem with someone, say, stickying a contest while it is going on, as long as they do that for other contests too and unsticky it after its over. The trick is that if we get to having several contests going on at once, the top of the forum in question is left pretty cluttered.

Overall, I'd leave it up to the individual mods in their own forums. If there are ANY forums that would be more likely to have more stickied topics, it's probably the DC and deckbuilding forums (for different reasons). As long as topics aren't stickied just because "they're cool" and certain topics are only stickied temporarily, it's fine by me.

But that's more a personal preference than anything else.

Dáin

Who then determines which contest is worthy of a sticky and who isn't? I see a lot of potential for jealousy and unfairness there. But stickying thread for anyone who wants a sticky = utter chaos. So I think the stickying contests and stuff should not be allowed at all.

Like I said, I can easily see that side of the argument. I'm rather impartial in this so long as things are fairly spread and not tons of threads getting stickied. So let's just sit back and see what others think.

Well, there is something to be said for stickying DC contests as a general rule, for example, but I'm really not bothered either way.

I don't think it's an issue that needs to be argued that much about... are there hurt feelings, or are you just thinking about the future? Overall I trust the mods to do what seems fair. If a "regular" member wants something stickied, ask the mod and let them make the call. If it looks like mods are being unfair (unlikely) than that can be addressed. What I said above is mostly personal preference -- I don't have a problem with a few stickies as long as it doesn't get out of hand (ie half a page of stickies).

Well...the thing is that its only been moderators' threads that have been stickied- menace, Thranduil...so...I think that the problem there is mods abusing their powers in that sense.

I think it's more likely that since they have the power to do it, they are thinking, "Hey, why not?" Have others asked for stickied threads and been denied? Perhaps there should just be a notice along the lines of, "If you want a thread stickied, please ask a mod."

In all fairness, lem0n stickied my thread because he wanted to find it. And it's the only DC contest running at the moment, and so would not in any way violate a policy of stickying contests.

And no one has asked me to sticky threads in the Chamber of Mazarbul.

Legit point about lem0n, I'm not accusing you, but it does connote a completely unintended aura of superiority. Remember, we're just users as well, putting ourselves above the average user doesn't get us respect, it gets us malice. In order to appear fair and unbiased, all threads requested must be stickied, which would result in chaos. If a thread is popular, then it will stay towards the top, if a thread is unpopular, it doesn't deserve to be stickied, thus, a sticky is entirely unnecessary.

No, I wasn't trying to 'shift the blame', I was just pointing out the reasons for it.

I too see NB's point, this would never have happened on CC but i think my reason is legitimate. I would unsticky it when the contest is over. Meh, the way i see it is unless someone complains its not hurting anyone.
