correct, this is not cancelling the skirmish. when you use Sting BotEL's ability, you must first survive the skirmish, whether on the winning or losing side.

So, you do indeed take the wounds (or burdens) if you are the Ring-Bearer? My understanding is that you do take the wounds or burdens, and discard the minion after the skirmish has been resolved.
