Star Wars CCG
« on: September 08, 2009, 03:54:20 pm »
Can someone just post a brief summary about the game? I don't know that I want to get into another card game, but if I did, this would probably be the one as it has gotten universally good reviews from people I have talked to.

Also, just for my own knowledge, average prices for rares, boosters, foils (if there are any), etc., just to put it into perspective as well. I don't think I am getting into the game soon, but just want a little background for future reference.

Also, which sets are the best. And I don't really just mean the best in overall quality, but characters too. I'm going to be much happier opening a pack and getting Darth Vader or Han Solo than getting the Elephant Guy from Jabba's Palace, you know?

Thanks!

The objective to star wars is to deplete your opponent's deck, or force as it is called, to 0.  You do this by battling in space and on other planets.  The more control you have of the star systems, the quicker your opponent loses.  It is a great game.  I've been playing it for years, longer than I've been playing LOTR. There is a very obvious power creep.  Death Star II is probably the best set.  Reflections 1,2, or 3 are also good.  Never play episode 1 cards with original trilogy cards.  Again, the power creep is too obvious and the game looses a lot of luster when you mix the two eras.  Frankly, episode 1 and original trilogy ( though they are 100% identical and compatible) are 2 different games.  One is fun, the other is munchkin.  All of this is based from the decipher star wars ccg.  I know nothing about jedi knights or the star wars TCG other than they are poorly made games that should never have seen the light of day.

Star Wars CCG was the game I was inquiring on.

I'm going to be honest. I love Star Wars, Episodes 4, 5, and 6. I hated Star Wars 1 and 2. I didn't even see 3. You can't convince me to see 3. George 'Toy Boy' Lucas decided that he wanted to change the Force--a sweet, new age-y zen idea--to #$&*@! bacteria in my blood stream.

Sorry that I think any Star Wars that thinks that the Force is aspergillus is #$&*@! retarded. So if I buy a pack and get #$&*@! Jar-Jar Binks, I'm going to go insane and burn down the entire internet.

That said, what would be a sweet set that if I just focused on that set, it would be balanced, multiple deck-types could be made, etc. Like, let's say, The Two Towers. If you just buy a bunch of those cards, you can make a ton of sweet decks because that's probably the coolest base set (Fellowship had too many errata'd cards...)

In the "standard" format over there (called "open"), all cards are legal. Star Wars CCG is a game that has never banned a card, and the Player's Committee plans on keeping it that way.

That being said, there are events where Episode I cards (among others) are not allowed, in a format known as Worlds 2000. In this format, you can use cards up through Death Star II.

If you want to learn more, head over to starwarsccg.org and sign up for a forum account. There are some major changes going on right now, so some of the people (Brad Eier, James Paul Booker, Brian Fred/retwin, Blake Huffman/anodos, etc) are a little riled up and intent on causing problems for everyone else. The truth of the matter is that the PC does have the best interests of the players in mind, both current and returning.

The best way to get into the game is to buy lots on eBay - there are probably some people getting out of the game right now, so hopefully you can get a good collection on the cheap.

That's all I have time for right now, I'll keep up with this thread though.

Thanks for the info, Hawkeye. I'll keep an eye on a few lots on eBay...probably with mostly cards from Death Star II or Reflections 1, 2, or 3 at jdizzy's suggestion.

I think the biggest reason I wouldn't get into the game is because I am ridiculously pretentious about my decks and would soon be trying to foil them all after I learn the rules and have solid decks (not like rookie decks in Lord of the Rings that have four copies of Lightfootedness, etc).

well, i'll tell you right now that foiling entire decks is nigh impossible in swccg - only a handful of the 2500+ cards ever got foiled - maybe about 400 of them?

anyway, it's a great game, as long as you don't let the *holes get to you.

By #$&*@! do you mean people who play the game? That I can deal with. Opening up seven packs and getting five Bib Fortuna and two plastic trash can droid from Jabba's Palace--well, again...I might go ape #$&*@!.

Yeah, stay away from jabba's palace until you have a solid collection.  The best place to start is the original unlimited set, but Death Star II is the best set overall.  However, enhanced jabba's palace had some neat stuff in it

Just to warn you though.  I had many boxes with unfortunate rare distribution in them with SW:CCG.  As I recall with Death Star 2 I bought two boxes and received 4 Millenium Falcons, 3 Lando's, no LSJK, no Emperor Palp, no Lord vader... but it is "random" I suppose.

Still one of the best games I've ever played.   Picking up someone's collection as Hawkeye suggested would be ideal.

luke, vader, and the emperor are 3rd rank ultra rares.  Three boxes won't get you any of them. You have to sell your soul to hades... as well as you're wife's soul... and your first born

Death Star 2 only had two ultra rares (Luke and Palpy).  Lord Vader was only an Ultra rare in the Reflections 2 set (in foil fashion).  From what all my fellow players pulled and what I read online, Ultra rares in DS2 came in about a 2:3 UR to Box ratio (meaning if you were to buy 3 boxes of DS2 chances are you would get 2 UR).

I understand that I just had bad luck with my two boxes, but it wasn't just about not getting any UR's..  There were many rares of which I received 3-4, sometimes even 5 copies.  That is generally considered to be bad distribution.  Either way, I still loved the set and traded my way up for the UR's.  It is frustrating that they made LS, JK such a hard card to get seeing as it is a vital card to have for deck-building.

Yes it is.  I've been playing for years and only seen 2 LS,JK in my entire life.
