Gimli's Helm, etc.
« on: September 29, 2009, 11:21:14 am »
Gimli's Helm, Armor, etc., all say, "[bearer] takes no more than 1 wound during each skirmish phase." Three questions:

Let's say I have Gimli bearing Gimli's Helm. He loses a skirmish and takes a wound. I have another character who dies in a following skirmish. Threats trigger. Does that mean that I cannot assign any of the threats to Gimli and must assign them to the remaining companions, or does that mean I can say, "I am going to give every threat wound to Gimli but nothing happens because of Gimli cannot take more than one wound?" I have to figure it is the former.

Edit: No, it doesn't work like that. As stated by Pepin the Brave and confirmed by others, ecah separate skirmish is a separate skirmish phase.

Second question, same scenario as the first question. I can discard Gimli's Helm to prevent all wounds to him and then assign all threat wounds to him which are negated, right? That does sound right. Does the preventing all wounds only last for that particular instance or does it last through the regroup phase (for a fierce skirmish, let's say).
Edit: This, indeed is correct, as pointed out by RedGoldStag, discarding Gimli's Helm does not prevent the assignment of the wounds. Same goes for Faramir, Wizard's Pupil. So you can indeed assign each threat wound to Gimli (which are negated).

The last question I have, and this is just clearing up, when it says each skirmish phase, that means skirmish number 1 and fierce skirmish, right? That is what I have always understood, as a fierce skirmish follows a second assignment phase, but now someone is claiming that is only if you move again that he could take another skirmish phase wound. That sounds incorrect to me.

Each Skirmish is treated as one separated skirmish phase. So Gimli can't take more than one skirmish during each skirmish. If he takes a wound in his skirmish he still can take another one in other skirmish (lets say Durin is skirmishing other minion).

For the threats i'm not sure but i would say he can take all wounds cause when a side is removed from skirmish (e.g. a companion dies) you go into the void "between" skirmish phases (one just ended an another is about to start). Maybe you can search in rulebook for the right timing. But i'm sure you can't assign threat wounds to him just to "vanish" threats if there is any other companion that can take it (remember you must perform the most that you can of an effect and if a companion can't take wounds that means that wounds can't be assigned to him). It's like Whraits: if they are all exhausted and you have the "no wound" condition out you have to assign threat wounds to those that can take it...

Each skirmish means the skismish of each companion (not counting fierce). So if you have 3 companions assigned to minions you have 3 separates skirmish phases. If one of the minion is fierce (assuming you dont kill it) you have another skirmish counting 4 skirmish phases in the total.

hope that helps more than confund ;)

That is incorrect. You have three skirmishes within one skirmish phase. The only way that you have multiple skimish phases in one turn is fierce skirmishes, in which case you replay the assignment and skirmish phase, and if you move again (in which case, you start over from the shadow phase).

No, Pepin is correct. As an example, take pumps. Unless they say something along the lines of "until the regroup phase," (like Savagery to Match Their Numbers) they only last for the current skirmish phase. If you give Gimli a +2 pump, he does not remain +2 in a fierce skirmish. Or... here's another scenario.

Merry, Friend to Sam with Escape.
Companion 1 (assigned)
Companion 2 (assigned)

Companion 1 starts his skirmish. You play Hobbit Intuition to make Merry str +3 and then double exert Merry to add his strength to Companion 1. Skirmish ends.
Companion 2 starts his skirmish. Merry is not still str +3. The effects of the pump only lasted for the first Skirmish phase.

And finally, the rulebook, under Skirmish Phase(S):

Quote from: Comprehensive Rulebook
When the assignment phase is complete, each
defending character will fight in a separate
skirmish phase.

Here's what I would like to know: What about Faramir, Wizard's Pupil? I think that when a wound is prevented, it was first assigned, so you can negate threat wounds. Different than Swept Away ("cannot"). I think Armor and Gimli's Helm are in the category of "cannot" (remember the Armor with Boromir BoC discussion?)

I stand corrected. :gp: to both of you for your help. So Faramir, Wizard's Pupil would be similar to the discarding text of Gimli's Helm in that it would negate threat wounds?

Check my edit. Pretty sure it makes wounding "impossible" so it does not negate threat wounds (rather, you cannot give them to Gimli).

Faramir, Wizard's Pupil.
Skirmish: Exert Gandalf to prevent all wounds to Faramir.

Gimli's Helm:
Skirmish: Discard Gimli's Helm to prevent all wounds to him.

Hmm...I understand the Armor with Boromir, Bearer of Council argument (which is not as unfortunate as the inability to use Sapling of the White Tree with Boromir, Bearer of Council), but I am just trying to figure out if there is a way to "absorb" threat wounds into one wound or no wounds...

...this is becoming quite an issue. Personally, I don't think Gimli's Helm is any good unless it does absorb threat wounds because the "one wound per" can really limit what you can do (similar to Armor on Boromir, Bearer of Council).

the inability to use Sapling of the White Tree with Boromir, Bearer of Council
explain?

As for Gimli's Helm, it can really help in pitch, say, against directed skirmish wounding, or if your Gimli is just getting messed up in a particular skirmish. Same with Armor. They help immensely for taking on big damage +1 guys, or minions that you know are gonna try to wound multiple times imo. However, Armor isn't my first choice lol; I'd most def go Coat of Mail (+ Faramir, PoI) or Footman's Armor (+ Aragorn, HttToG)

The Boromir, Bearer of Council with Armor goes like this:

If you have Boromir, Bearer of Council wearing Armor, at the start of each skirmish involving him you have to add the burdens because you cannot wound him twice.

On the same note, if you use Boromir, Bearer of Council and attempt to prevent one of the wounds with Sapling of the White Tree, you have to add the other wound and the three burdens because you have made it impossible to complete the two wound part of his game text.

Yikes!

Oh you mean Sapling while he wears Armor? That's another story lol; BoC + Armor is trash. By himself he's ace with a few Saplings  Or just make it so he won't fight ;)

I have a similarish question. Say I have berserk butcher, some other uruk hai, and, say, desert lord. There is an archery total of three. Can I shoot the uruks and prevent the wounds? or do I have to assign them to the lord?
No one loves you like I do.

If wounds are prevented, they can't be assigned. So therefore the Berserk Butcher would be unable to soak archery wounds, and Desert Lord would die a sad death. However, exert Desert Lord 2x with his archery ability and you just saved 2 wounds since Butcher can't be wounded.

This is what I was referring to in the Gimli's Helm and Armor comparison. One wound limit.

Anautikus, are you sure that prevented wounds are not first assigned? Compare with Isengard Shaman -- first the wound is assigned and "about to" be taken, then it is prevented.

Kralik, but for Isengard Shaman, that's a response to a wound being assigned. I was speaking strictly about the Butcher.

I mean, since the prevention action was a maneuver action that goes through to the assignment phase, doesn't that make it so that archery wounds cannot be assigned the Butcher? So that would make for my argument of archery wounds being unable to be assigned to Uruks due to Butcher's effect.

Correct me if I'm wrong, though, because now I'm second guessing.
