So, as I mentioned, I am considering selling my fifth generation, 80 GB iPod, Poster Nutbag. It has been a great iPod and has served me well these past three+ years (I got it when it was brand new in 2006). In short, I am near out of room (I haven't synced it in fear of going over) and so I am planning on upgrading to the 160 GB iPod classic, which sells on Apple for $249.
While 5th Generation 80 GB iPods still sell on eBay (new) for $150, I am offering the opportunity to purchase the new iPod, filled with music. I have taken into account the theory of the cost per song (12K songs is about $12K on iTunes, mind you!) and have basically determined that if someone is content with paying $250 + shipping, I will send them Poster Nutbag.
This post should likely be in the Marketplace, but I am more doing this to share, briefly, what is on the iPod with the perspective clientele. But before I do that, a few notes for those of you who have not owned iPods.
- Use iTunes for your music. It is better anyways than Windows Media, Zune, or any other program I have ever used. I avoided getting an iPod for four generations to not be a part of the fad, but Apple knows what they are doing (and market it well).
- You will likely want the music you get to be on your computer, or to add and delete your own music to the iPod. Due to Apple's contracts with record labels, you cannot automatically retrieve music from the iPod with iTunes. To do this, you will need to download a third-party application from the internet. Most are between $15 and $25 USD; I use Senuti and it works great for me.
- If you feel guilty in any way, don't. I own all of the CDs that appear on my iPod so consider it that you just downloaded the music from a friend. Not really stealing.
- Those of you who know me know that I am obsessive-compulsive. One thing you will not find is repeated bands, etc. A common example (which make me want to jump off a cliff) would be searching and seeing: "Beatles," "The Beatles," "Teh Beatles," "Beatle," "The Beetles." Point is, everything is very well-organized.
- The actual iPod itself is 80 GB. But about 5.7 of the GB is the actual iPod programing, which leaves about 74.3 GB of the iPod for actual music. Please understand that when I suggest this is a filled 80 GB unit, the actual numbers are about 65 GB music, 1 GB pictures (the album covers saved on the unit), 6 GB films/television shows, 1 GB podcasts. Again, that is before I do a final update for the unit, which will likely fill it completely.
- While there are admittedly some, this is not the kind of iPod collection that is just a collection of Greatest Hits albums. That is definitely no good.
Anyways, here are some highlights from the collection. I cannot decide if I should place them alphabetically or by genre, but let me make a few generalizations:
There is a lot of: "Classic" rock, Jazz, "Conscious" Hip-Hop, Blues, Folk
There is a good bit of: Indie, R&B, Jam Band, Swing/Big Band
There is some: Swing, Soundtrack music, Pop, Alternative Rock, Electronica/Dance, Classical, Opera
There is nearly none of/no: Religious, "Hard" Rock, "Gangster" Rap, Punk, Modern Rock/Top 40s of today
I will post specific bands and albums later. Anyone who asks me if I have Journey, Bon Jovi, or Bruce Springsteen automatically loses out on any chances to bid.
Hopefully this garners some interest. If more than one person is interested as of this Friday, I will likely open it up to bidding. A few years ago, they sold an iPod that had about 30 GB of music claiming to be from Tom Petty's computer on eBay...that went for about $1000. I don't expect this to do that at all, but there is no way in #$&*@! you will ever find all the CDs on here for less than $250, so I still see this as a great deal.
Thanks for checking this out.
