Flaw in Star Wars Plot (Episodes 4, 5, and 6 only)
« on: June 20, 2010, 06:08:56 am »
I hate to say it, but now when I watch Star Wars, I see a major plot flaw.

So, the whole films, the Rebel Alliance is trying to beat the "Evil Empire." But there is nothing at all in the films that suggests that the Empire is "evil" at all. Actually, they just seem more than interested in doing their thing and letting other people do theirs.

I mean, imagine that you were a high-ranking government official and a group of rabble-rousers tried to destroy your government. You'd probably try to quell any of those agitators too.

The only time the Empire was actually shown interacting with another planet or peoples was Return of the Jedi. They were just chilling at their little station and the Ewoks were doing their happy thing. It wasn't until those troublemakers Han Solo and Princess Leia showed up that the Ewoks took up arms. In fact, the Ewoks didn't seem to mind Storm Troopers doing their thing until Leia started corrupting them.

I actually really feel bad for poor Emperor Palpatine right about now. He was just doing his thing in the world (or worlds) and then these naysayers start killing his troopers and wrecking his economic stability and then stealing his designs and blowing up his space stations.

And, at least the second time around, that thing was still in serious construction. So Lando probably killed 500,000+ contractors who were just trying to make some money for their families back on Tatooine. The more I think about it, the more messed up Star Wars really is.

Thoughts?

I'd say the mass-annihilation of the Jedi was pretty evil.

Hey! Hey! Hey! I said just episodes 4, 5, and 6. As for those films, it is only implied that the Jedi were killed by the Sith. And you know what? If they were leading a rebellion, I can see why a government would want to wipe them out.

It wouldn't be the first time that a rebellion got quelled by a government and a lot of these governments wouldn't be considered "evil."

Was that sarcasm? xD
I'm sure people on Alderaan who got deathstared in episode 4 would have something to say about that. Ow wait...They wouldn't...They are all dead. Killing civilians seems pretty evil to me.

Well, you might say that. But the genocide of the people at Alderaan, again, was representative of a government trying to stop an uprising by those political terrorists, the Rebel Alliance.

Yeh. Just checked what Godwin's law is, and u're right. xD Was unaware if it's existance. I'll chose my words more carefully from now on. But i dunno. If your standards for someone to be evil are that high, there must be very little real antagonists for ya. I'm sure Sauron was just minding his own business taking over the world, and destroying the race of men. And Hannibal Lecter was juuuust hungry...He wasn't a perverted bastard at all. So was the wolf, when he huffed and puffed the lill piggs' houses away.

But i guess someone being evil is just a matter of perspective. I'm sure rebels thought the empire was evil, and that's why they fought it.

That makes sense until you put it in a modern, realistic perspective and realize that Al Qaeda thinks that Capitalism/"The West" is evil.

Am I saying the Rebel Alliance is Al Qaeda? Well, I guess I am.

Many Americans think that Capitalism is evil aswell. Check out Capitalism: A love story by Michael Moore. A good film. I dont think u can compare the 2. The situation in america isn't that black/white, than in SW.

I'd also like to note that you are the second person on these boards that compared me to Hilter.

I don't think the Empire's situation was black and white either. They were just trying to rule over the galaxy like a good government should and a little group of ragtag malcontents are blowing up their space stations.

It'd piss me off too.

But can you see the last 3 movies apart from the development out of the first 3? You could say if you look at the releasedates that you can. But storiewise you obviously can't. And if you can't then you can not deny the claim of the rebels. Allthough one might argue that the Empire's rule wasn't all that bad indeed....

I know I wouldn't like to live under the Empire. But I'll have to agree. It wasn't all that bad, but on the other hand, Hitler's government wasn't all bad(yeh, i know...godwin xD). I mean...He did some work in medicine and stuff. But like I said...Takin in concideration the atrocities palpy, and the empire comitted, I'd say their government was bad(if not evil), and it had to be fought, by the people who still had some conscience. Thus, the storyline makes perfectly sense to me. It's worth noticing that Lucas was heavily influenced by the WW2, so comparing Empire and Germany is not entirely off course.

Again, I point to the Ewoks as the only example of the Empire on another peoples' planet. They were just doing their own thing at their government base, kind of like how governments have embassies.

The Ewoks were fine with that and everything seemed okay.

The only other times that the Empire was on other planets were Tatooine looking for known fugitives (C3P0 and R2D2) and in Cloud City, again after known terrorists had docked.

Sure, they've had some troublesome dealings (bounty hunters) but keep in mind that the US government hires Dawg the Bounty Hunter...
