This discussion and ruling is part of the series of discussions and rulings for an "Unofficial Rulebook" as described here.

This discussion will be open from Aug 15, 2010 - Aug 18, 2010.
The outcome of this discussion and ruling will be added to the "Unofficial Rulebook".

Discussion #7:

Can Rabbit Stew be transferred to any Fellowship companion, or just [Shire] Fellowship companions?    (previous discussion)

Option 1:
Any Fellowship companion, because the general rule should be that "Bearer must be..." only matters when a card is played.

Option 2:
Only [Shire] Fellowship companions, because the general rule should be that "Bearer must be..." matters when a card is played or transferred.

Which one is in the rulebooks? I can't seem to find it.

Sorry my wording was confusing.  I haven't found a current clear ruling at this point; that's the problem.  Therefore, we will make one in this discussion.

Option 1, ES (respective Bib) pointed out the whole thing very well, also with the counter-example Strange-Looking Men.

Option 1 is definitely the way to go.

What's the counterexample Wkx5? Looks to me that Strange-Looking Men supports the idea that bearer requirements matter when they're transferred.

Unless someone links to Bib's explanation, I have to believe that it is option two. A transferred possession must go to an eligible bearer.

If that is proved not to be the case, I'm going to start looking for ways to put Anduril, Flame of the West on Faramir.

I think that to transfer a card, the bearer must meet the requirements of bearing it. If I remember correctly, Bib said that rabbit stew changed the requirements for bearer. I disagree, because when it says "Each time bearer wins a skirmish, you may transfer this condition to a fellowship companion" that is merely another restriction on who can bear it, limiting it to [Shire] companions, and then (when that ability activates) [Shire] fellowship companions. Option 2 for me.

Yeah, I've got to go with Lemon on this one:

Quote from: CRD
transfer
You may transfer an artifact or possession between your Free Peoples characters during your fellowship phase by paying the twilight cost for that artifact or possession again. (Minions cannot transfer artifacts or possessions.)

An artifact or possession may be transferred only to a character who may bear it. (See bearer.)

That's enough for me. Option two.

And these days, you have to go with the intent rather than what's actually written more often than not.
Best regards, Dáin, Vice Aftokrator of the Chosen Ones

I agree with Dain, but I don't know how Tbiesty plans to handle this sort of situation. I think Decipher intended for this card to be transferable to all fellowship companions, and if they still cared they would issue a clarification.

"Bearer must be" only applies when you're playing the card in this case.

Now, it also usually applies during transfers. HOWEVER, the transfer text says that new characters can bear it in addition to the initial group. So non-Shire fellowship companions can bear it when you transfer it to them.

Most of the time when you transfer stuff, it can only be transferred to another eligible bearer (Strange-looking Men, using the fellowship phase transfer action, etc). But Rabbit Stew changes who the eligible bearer is when you transfer it.

there you go Thranduil, Strange-looking man prooves Option 1 pretty well ;)

that's about usual transferring duuring the fellowship Phase. Cards usually overread Rules (e.g. Sent Back) so I'm still for Option 1. I agree the card needs a clarification, cus' this isn't really obvious.

(3) Faramir, Son of Denethor (V)  [Gondor]
Companion • Man
Strength: 7
Vitality: 3
Resistance: 6
Signet: Frodo
Ring-bound. Ranger.
Response: If Aragorn dies, make Faramir the Anduril-bearer.
Did you think you can only transfer the One Ring if the bearer dies?

there you go ket! ;)

The transfer rules appear to apply to possessions and artifacts. Conditions can't normally be transferred so i am not sure looking at the transfer rules means anything.

I am not sure option 1 or 2 quite get this right as the condition can only be transferred because the card allows it (over-riding the rules).

For me ...

Option 3 ... Rabbit Stew can be transferred to a fellowship companion because the card allows it. Who can bear it is only relevant when playing it in the fellowahip phase.

Does this make sense?

Sorry to be difficult

Since there's no official ruling about it, I would say we should try and preserve consistency, and make it transfer like possessions and artifacts.

What I am trying to say here is that it is the card that bends the rules ... of which there are many examples in the existing game.

If you do just what the cards says ... IMO it can be transferred to a fellowship companion (because the card allows it). In this case 'Bearer must be ..." is irrelevant. If you look beyond the card for invisible rules ... that is where confusion and a special ruling is needed.

It's just my take on it. I am sure there are others that don't agree with me. I am open to suggestion to swing my vote.

I think this one will be a divided vote.
