The New Guy
« on: November 11, 2010, 08:45:12 am »
This guy has necro'd a few old threads with spam, and spammed a new topic. Anymore and its a warning for him.

I think it should already be strike one, although we needn't call it "strike one" (from strike two onward it's ok to say "strike X"). I say, let's send him a warning and explain the reasons.

I'm thinking the Rules and Guidelines thread could use an update on double posting, topic necromancing, and habitual spamming. Any of these bother / not bother you guys, and any other rules to add?

As a suggestion:

Spamming. This is treated lightly for the most part, unless it becomes a habit. Note that you can be on topic and still be spamming, if what comes out is consistently frivolous/unhelpful.

Double posting. As a general rule, edit your posts instead of posting consecutively in a thread. Double posting is fine if you have something to add after some time; not so much if afterthoughts are stacking up a few minutes apart.

Topic necromancing. Dredging up old posts is generally discouraged, as they may contain outdated material, or members' opinions may have changed since then. If you feel there's a good reason for it, then keep things constructive. Please don't chip in on a conversation that ended a year ago just to give your stamp of approval.

Actually, I rather enjoy necromancy.

...

On forums, that is. We have so little traffic, who cares if an old thread is brought up? And on a side note, who cares if someone asks a question for the fifth time in the last two years? I have seen too many forums where some newbie asks a simple question and gets shot down by a dozen old-timers who don't bother to respond except with, "USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION YOU &@#*$!"

Might as well enjoy the participation that we get.

The necro wasn't so much the issue, as the spam in the Marketplace

For questions that can be searched, I figure it's at the user's own "risk" of potentially waiting longer for an answer, or of people just not wanting to answer them again. Some responses have a "don't trouble us with this" vibe which personally I don't agree with.

The necromancy part (along with spamming and double posting) seem to be common enough rules that breaking them are noticed. Frequent violations lead to annoyance, annoyance leads to bickering, and bickering leads to awful, awful prequels no good. If any of these are actually fine, maybe that should be noted to clear things up.

Or we can just let hrcho continue to follow The New Guy around. :-k

Well, it seems The New Guy has not let up. Did your warning touch down on consequences, TheJord? I was going to let him know his posts risk deletion, unless you had something else in mind.

It mentioned suspension and possible banning. Ket's response in the King board, whilst not the best way to handle the situation, did make me laugh a lot.

Let's just say there's a good reason TheJord won our little ballot for Admin, he's a bit more patient than me. Me? I've gone post-hunting in The New Guy's profile, and deleted some of the most recent non-additive posts, knock him down a peg on the post count. I've gone as far as page 2 of his profile, but I'm planning on clearing them ALL so as to send a message.
