The thing is, cards override the rules all the time. Otherwise Gamling, Warrior of Rohan couldn't use his text to play possessions.

Wait a second.  I think I get what you're saying.  In Gil-Galad's, Bilbo's, and SSAoF's case, it is THEIR text that lets you play the condition out of phase, not the condition itself.

"A condition is always played during the fellowship phase, even if it provides a special ability that is performed during a different phase."

That's still awfully ridiculous, since "always" should actually mean "always," but what can you do?  ...There's still that lively debate about BotB / NFFatRoD which I'm not sure about after this, but its language is that of Mordor, which I will not utter here.
