Editing the Dead Pile

I wasn't aware that this was possible. So... I may be able to find a mod to restrict edit permissions. OR, perhaps set a edit time limit (for example, you can only edit your post within 15 minutes of posting). Such a limit would not apply to mods. Thoughts?

Assuming that time limit applies ONLY to the Dead Pile, I would go that route, personally.

I second Dain. Worst case scenario where something really needed editing, and the author wanted to but couldn't due to the expired time limit, they could always just PM a mod.
Forget it. I'm not arguing with the computer anymore to try to get the sig I want....

Well, I found a solution in the SMF admin backup. Turns out you can set rather detailed permissions by membergroup or by board. ;D Members can no longer edit posts in the Dead Pile.

Any reason to remove the ability for members to delete their own posts? I suppose it doesn't matter since deleted posts are moved to the Dead Pile automatically now, so they aren't really lost.

Also, I would like to remind mods to be careful not to interfere to the point that you irritate others. Inappropriate content should go to the Dead Pile, and perhaps multi-post threadjacks, but I don't delete posts where members are being silly or just clowning around. I noticed a few things in there that seemed innocent. Perhaps it was the members themselves deleting their own posts, but in the future, if you move something to the Dead Pile, please post a reason on the dead thread.

Thanks! :)

I second that wholeheartedly. I've gotten a few PMs asking for posts to be deleted/locked where people were just being a little zany. No harm in that, I say, unless the content turns down questionable alleys.

It's a judgement call, to be sure, but as long as there's no inappropriate content (malicious or hurtful language, excessive swearing, content not safe for children or simply not polite, etc.), I say let it ride.

Dáin

Preceding line of spam has been moved to the dead pile...

not.

Question. The instance where I was deleting spam was in my thread. Is that okay? Like, can mods "moderate" their threads with less regulations, or moderate other threads per the starter's request?

I think that would be okay.

I'd be careful NB, I dont think there was a need to moderate any comments made in that topic. 2/3 posts of spam dont constitute a split or deletion in my mind. Others dont have the power to moderate their own threads.

Some people already feel like their enough mods on this site, so lets not fuel the fire.

Agreed with what Kralik was saying. All this deleting, post editing, and throwing "we mods" about in other people's faces is making me wince.

Deletion - I think members should be able to delete their posts outright without having it moved to the Dead Pile. I'm assuming if they delete it, they no longer want people to see it. Beats clearing the post first with an edit and then sending a blank to the pile.

Editing - No time limit in normal forums. This is taking away privileges for no good reason. However posts in the Dead Pile are essentially under lock, so I think member edits should be disabled there.
