Serving Your King
« on: March 18, 2010, 02:28:39 pm »
Here's an idea I had in Thranduil's thread that I wanted to expand upon. These would be Movie eligible. I have no knowledge of broken combinations outside of Movie Block.

[1] Loyal Soldiers [Gondor]
Condition • Support Area
To play, exert 2 [Gondor] Men.
While you can spot Faramir or Aragorn, each [Gondor] man is a ranger.
While you can spot Denethor or Boromir, each [Gondor] man is a knight.
"We will follow you, Lord!"

[2] Gondrian Armor-Bearer [Gondor]
Strength 5
Vitality 3
While you can spot Faramir, this companion is a ranger.
While you can spot Boromir, this companion is a knight.
While Faramir or Boromir is assigned to a skirmish, this companion is strength +2.

[1] What Do My People Say? [Rohan]
Condition • Support Area
To play, exert Theoden or Eomer.
While you can spot Theoden or Eomer, each [Rohan] Man is valiant.
Response: If Theoden is about to be killed in a skirmish, place a valiant companion in the dead pile instead and add two threats to prevent this.

[3] •Elladan, Elder Brother [Elven]
Strength 7
Vitality 3
Elrohir's twilight cost is -2.
While you can spot a ranger, Elladan is a ranger.
While you can spot Elrond, Elladan is defender +1.

[3] •Elrohir, Younger Son [Elven]
Strength 7
Vitality 3
Elladan's twilight cost is -2.
While you can spot a ranger, Elohir is a ranger.
While you can spot Elrond, Elrohir is damage +1.

Maybe I will add more. Maybe not.

I like Valiant Militiaman.

I would love a different title. When I think of a "militiaman," I think of the U.S. Revolutionary War, not axes and swords and bows.

Loyal Soldiers with Boromir, BoC in a Ring-bound Ranger deck would let Boromir use knight and Ring-bound Ranger stuff and the Ring-bound Rangers use knight stuff (e.g. Rally Point or Take cover to get back Third Level). Quite powerful (although maybe not overpowered).

I like Valiant Militiaman.

Southern Recruit, maybe (with lore about the common people who joined the military)?

[2] Loyal Soldiers [Gondor]
Condition • Support Area
While you can spot Faramir or Aragorn, each [Gondor] man is a ranger.
While you can spot Denethor or Boromir, each [Gondor] man is a knight.
"We will follow you, Lord!"
I wonder if this should have some restriction? Maybe if you have initiative, or maybe it should discard if you don't move on, or if you can't spot a certain number of fortifications or something - I feel like you should have to work at least a little.

[2] Valiant Militiaman [Gondor]
Strength 5
Vitality 3
While you can spot Faramir, this companion is a ranger.
While you can spot Boromir, this companion is a knight.
While Faramir or Boromir is assigned to a skirmish, this companion is strength +2.
This guy's okay. A toolbox.

[1] What Do My People Say? [Rohan]
Condition • Support Area
While you can spot Theoden or Eomer, each [Rohan] Man is valiant.
Response: If Theoden is about to be killed in a skirmish, place a valiant companion in the dead pile instead. Add two threats.
Again I wonder about a condition for this one to stay in play. Maybe if Théoden or Éomer are not exhausted or something? Also, I think the wording should be "If Théoden is about to be killed in a skirmish, add 2 threats and place a valiant companion in the dead pile to prevent that."

[3] •Elladan, Elrond's Son [Elven]
Strength 7
Vitality 3
Elrohir's twilight cost is -2.
While you can spot a ranger, Elladan is a ranger.
While you can spot Elrond, Elladan is defender +1.

[3] •Elrohir, Elrond's Son [Elven]
Strength 7
Vitality 3
Elladan's twilight cost is -2.
While you can spot a ranger, Elohir is a ranger.
While you can spot Elrond, Elrohir is damage +1.
Already said I liked these. But I wouldn't mind seeing an Elrond to go with them.

With the wording on the Theoden condition, I want to add the two threats after the companion is placed in the dead pile.

Already said I liked these. But I wouldn't mind seeing an Elrond to go with them.

It won't have anything to do with the brothers, but I made it just for you:

[4] •Elrond, Bearer of Tidings [Elven]
Ally • Site 3
Strength 8
Vitality 4
Maneuver: Exert Elrond twice to play a [Gondor] or [Elven] artifact from your draw deck. Elrond may participate in archery fire and skirmishes until the regroup phase.

And here's a bonus:

[2] •Arwen, Fearless [Elven]
Ally • Home 3
Strength 6
Vitality 3
Skirmish: Exert Arwen to make Elladan or Elrohir strength +2.
Skirmish: Exert Arwen to make Aragorn strength +3.

Okay, so this is more like the movies to me. Elrond delivers Anduril and all is well. Arwen is an ally, stuck at home, but her thought makes Aragorn work harder and fight and whatnot. Plus, I like the idea of tough ally characters that you wouldn't consider allies (in Arwen's case, at least).

I like the Elrond you made. Maybe you should think about replacing 'Bearer of' by something else as it is normally given to alternate RBs.

Having a Ally version of Arwen is a pretty cool idea. However, the one you made seems too powerful compared to Golradir and Saelbeth. I would at least reduce the bonus to '+1' and '+2'.

I really love both of them. Fantastic flavour, not as broken as some allies. I wonder if Arwen's text should be a bit more general however, maybe "Exert Arwen to make a [Gondor] or [Elven] companion strength +1 (or +2 if that companion is Elladan or Elrohir, or +3 if that companion is Aragorn)." Or something perhaps cleaner. She's not that good (Golradir and Saelbeth are pretty bad) but she's decent and playable, especially with the old Elronds like Lord of Rivendell or Herald to Gil-Galad.

I originally had the Elrond subtitle "Circlet and Eyebrows" because I couldn't think of anything. So be my guest to suggest something.

Edit: Come to think of it, I don't really like Arwen's subtitle either. As to her ability, I believe that its specification makes it easier to justify a cost of [2]. The only vitality pump I can think of that she could bear is The Tale of Gil-Galad and while there is decent healing, I don't think that she will be overpowered as is.

Could see The Choice of Luthien pop up in a few more decks, though!

Edit 2: Added some clauses in the first post. Also, changed the Elven Twins' subtitles.

There's just one problem about not using The choice of Luthien: Aragorn's Bow is an archery special ability,so either change the bow or The choice of Luthien so that both effects can take place during the same phase.

Okay, the problem with what you recommended is that you are a fan of brokenness. There are enough great maneuver actions and you can get set up for the archery and skirmish phase stuff with The Choice of Luthien.

How in any way would determining that Arwen wants to be mortal happen during the archery phase anyways? The card is fine as it stands and there are some pretty neat tricks that could be pulled off with it. Plus, it would work great to remove wounds from the ally Arwen I proposed.

You are no fun, Thranduil. But :gp:, because at the end of the day, civility wins.

It is a shame, because I self-deleted the perfect "next step" in that so-called "debate."
